The AIQ Counselling Journey: a step-by-step guide to what happens between your NEET result and medical college admission.

Register on portal. Upload Nativity and Community certificates. Pay refundable security deposit.
This step decides everything. Add 25-30 colleges. Order by real preference, checking fees and location.
Keep your seat while remaining eligible for a better college. If better is allotted, previous is auto-replaced.
Classes begin only in Round 2. Opt for upgradation if you want a better choice. No upgrade means keeping current seat.
Last opportunity for those without any seat. Downloading allotment order is treated as joined.
Visit allotted college in person. Carry original certificates and NEET scorecard to complete formalities.
Your medical journey begins. Join classes on the scheduled date and stay updated with notifications.
NEET UG counselling happens through two parallel pathways.
The seat availability chart. It shows how many seats are available in each college and course for each category, helping you understand where opportunities are available before making your choices.
Your dream college wishlist — the list of colleges and courses you'd be happy to join. Rank your options from "I'd love this!" to "I'd be happy with this too."
Telling the system what you want: select and arrange colleges and courses in the order you prefer. Put your favourite options at the top, as the system considers your preferences in that order.
The moment your choices turn into a seat. You'll receive a result showing the college and course offered. If eligible, you may choose to participate in further rounds for an upgrade.
Classes begin only in Round 2. Opt for upgradation if you want a better choice — a new seat allotted automatically cancels the old one. No upgrade means keeping your current seat.
The last opportunity — only those without any seat can participate. The process is the same as earlier rounds; do not wait to confirm, as downloading the allotment order is treated as joined.

| Map your AIQ rank against previous year closing ranks to identify realistic, aspirational, and safe college targets. |
| Confirm your category: UR / OBC-NCL / SC / ST / EWS / PwD / Defence. Renew OBC-NCL and EWS certificates if needed (should have been issued after April 1, 2026). |
| Build your target list across AI Counselling by MCC and your home state. Add 2-3 open states if required. |
| Organise documents before allotment. You may have as few as 3 working days between allotment and college reporting. |
Accept + try to upgrade in R2: Your R1 seat is held safely; if R2 gives something better, R1 auto-cancels — almost always the right call.
Resign to go fresh in R2: Only if the R1 college is one you would never attend under any scenario — high risk, as R2 seats may be fewer with higher competition.
Govt AIQ vs Govt state: Pick the better college by reputation, not location — AIQ seats are harder to get, but your home state may have a stronger college.
Govt vs Private state: Take the Govt seat every time, unless the private college is in the CMC Vellore / St. John's range.
Deemed universities often have significantly higher fees. If you have a realistic chance of securing a government medical college through state counselling, it may be worth waiting before making a final decision.
Makes sense when: you're borderline between govt and private, missed ≤50 marks, are targeting a top-5 AIIMS specifically, and family can absorb the delay.
Doesn't make sense when: already above the AIQ closing rank for a decent govt college, already dropped once, or already scoring 600+ with little room for better colleges.
